Roy Strickland, Professor of Architecture, Publishes "Renaissance Plan for New York City’s Public Housing" in Municipal Art Society of New York’s report Ideas for New York City’s New Leadership.

Written for the new mayoral administration of William de Blasio Strickland’s paper proposes that New York City plan its 2,500 acres of public housing in its entirety while determining locations for new residential, commercial, institutional, and employment facilities that can provide revenue streams for the maintenance and enhancement of existing public housing.

Strickland illustrates his paper with examples of his recent Taubman College urban design studios focused on public housing located in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and Astoria in Queens.

In his introduction to the MAS publication Tony Hiss of The New Yorker writes: "When it comes to the city’s 334 housing projects which house 400,000 New Yorkers, Roy Strickland celebrates them as ‘an asset, not a liability,’ whose ‘residents are assets’ and whose homes can become ‘centers of vital neighborhoods’ – ‘without demolition or displacement.’"

The Municipal Art Society of New York is a 120-year old civics organization composed of community, professional, business and institutional leaderships dedicated to the city’s planning and design. Strickland serves on its Preservation Committee.
